Does Red Light (LED) Therapy Really Work?

So the question is "Does Red Light Therapy really work?

The answer is a resounding YES!!!

I will try and explain in easy terms without all the scientific data that tends to confuse me sometimes.

First of all, let's determine the #1 cause for decrease of collagen and elastin over time.

Aging, of course, contributes but that can be managed somewhat easily with regular facial treatments and facial  massage (cupping is great which I offer).  The Black Diamond Facial is an example of a relaxing, yet very effective treatment that includes upper body and facial massage.  The Medi-Cupping Facial also is an extraordinary treatment that also promotes stimulation of the collagen and elastin "firing" to increase circulation.  Improving dermal circulation (blood flow) is vital.  But the #1 cause of the collagen and elastin breaking down is sun exposure over time.  The damaging rays of the sun are the primary cause of premature aging of the skin.  It is true that short term sun exposure is beneficial due to the beneficial rays that come from the sun.  The sun has both beneficial and harmful light rays that emit.  We want only the beneficial rays from the sun.  These are the rays that are good for us and our skin.

What does Light Therapy do for our skin?

As time goes on, new technologies are being discovered everyday in all types of fields, including skin health.  We've heard how light (laser) can cut glass, re-surface skin, be used in certain types of surgery, be used in treating vericose veins and so much more.  Well, LED Light Therapy technology has been designed to harness the beneficial rays only.  The beneficial rays of light create the opposite effect of the damaging rays the sun emits.  LED Light Therapy increases and repairs collagen and elastin in the skin and works both in the dermal layer and epidermal layer of the skin improving the skin in overall tightening and plumping of the tissue reducing lines, pigmentation and even strengthening the skin overall.  Wow! That sounds like a winner to me!  This is why I've added this to my services.  You receive benefits in simply one 30 minute treatment, but I recommend adding light therapy a couple time a month (if not more) for maximum skin health.

The pictures above are taken directly from Celluma's website (the Light I use here).  These women aren't receiving regular facial treatments (that is obvious)....imagine the results when you are!  My ladies (clients) are getting younger everyday:)

How do I prepare for a treatment?

Keep in mind that when coming in for light therapy, you will want your skin to be free of any makeup, sunscreen etc. to allow the light to penetrate fully without being hampered by product.  I keep facial cleansers in the restroom to wash the skin, if necessary, before your treatment.  If coming in for a skin treatment with me, you will want to have your light therapy prior to the skin treatment.

How long is the treatment?

The light therapy is a timed treatment of 30 minutes.  I offer the Aqua Detox treatment as a paired treatment (it is also 30 minutes) for those who want to have a double treatment at the same time.  These treatments are given in the Relaxation Room with an added (complimentary) 15 minute heated automated shiatsu foot and back massage to leave you feeling completely relaxed.  Lazy brooks, low lighting and soft music allow you to escape this crazy world for just a little while:)  There are pepperming steamed towels in the towel warmer for your feet after your 30 minute Aqua Detox treatment (if you choose to get that).

LED Light Therapy (alone) $45
LED Light Therapy and Aqua Detox $80
VIP's receive both treatments included in lieu of a skin treatment or only $35 additional for both Light Therapy and Aqua Detox anytime.

Coffee - Peri-Menopause - Acne?????

Can coffee trigger an acne breakout????

I don't know about you guys, but I love my coffee!  About 2 or 3 years ago, I started saving my extra morning pot of coffee and bringing it in a coffee thermos to work.  The amount of coffee I drank at work varied depending on whether I had breaks in between clients.

I have noticed over the past couple of years that I would have "hormonal" breakouts that I thought were triggered by food, vitamins, menopause, etc., yet I could never pinpoint the exact cause of my "flare-ups".  When I say "hormonal" breakouts, this  means acne around the jawline and around the nose, etc.

I have been doing extensive research and have come up with this explanation for my hormonal breakouts:

  • Coffee increases the stress hormone "Cortisol".  This will increase oil production and wreak havoc on your skin from the inside out!  Breakouts are either internal or external or a combination of both.
  • Inflammation in the gut may be a side effect (it was with me)
  • Foods may also increase breakouts due to the already stressed body system (ie. Greek yogurt, Omega Fatty Acid supplements)...
  • I drank my coffee black - so sugar wasn't even a consideration in these flare-ups
  • Coffee has mold in it - even organic - decaffeinated coffee is worse with more toxins than regular coffee.
So, the good news I found:

  • Coffee aids in burning brown fat
  • increases metabolism
  • tastes good:)
Okay, so this is what I did with the information:

  • I drink two healthy (big) cups in the early morning before getting on the treadmill for my cardio
  • Cut out coffee for the rest of the day and replaced it with Doterra Mito Max (this is a caffeine replacement vitamin)....Love the Doterra vitamin supplements.
Just this simple change cleared my skin completely within two days!!!  Cortisol stress hormones are very real and wreak havoc in the skin!!!  Beauty sleep is imperative and we all need to take better care of ourselves!!!

Take Care,

An Exquisite Skin Care Line

Skin Care By Jewls, LLC is proud to announce her newly formed Professional Skin Care Line, Black Diamond Professional Skin Care, available now at the Day Spa and on her online Shopping Cart.

My Favorite Scrub of All-Time!!!

Skin Care By Jewls has been using Professional Skin Care Lines since becoming an Aesthetician in the year 2005 in AZ.  After learning much in regards to cosmeceutical ingredients and how the industry is constantly changing, Jewls decided to incorporate her own products into her Day Spa and skin treatments to offer a unique variety that no other spa offers.

After having to discontinue two former skin care lines (Rhonda Allison & Epicuren) from my practice and for various reasons (mainly pricing and political), Jewls decided it was time to carry her own high-end brand to keep quality high and costs affordable.  The Black Diamond Skin Care Line beautifully compliments PCA Professional Skin Care line (which I carry here at the spa).  I consider Black Diamond Skin Care my "Luxury Builder Line" and PCA Skin Care as my "Corrective Line".

In short, the Black Diamond Line is a complimenting addition to Skin Care By Jewls' practice.

Cleansing and Exfoliating properly is the foundation for healthy skin.  It only takes about 5 minutes morning and night to properly cleanse your skin.  Then, when products are applied topically, they can actually penetrate the skin at a deeper level and do what they are designed to do!

Also remember, dry skin is DEAD skin!

Correctives, peels will promote dry skin because they are causing "cell turnover".  What you want to do is gently exfoliate that dead skin to reveal new, baby smooth skin.  Make sure you are using professional products so you dont irritate that skin - red, irritated skin is typically mistreated skin, not Rosacea.  Please also keep in mind, when you exfoliate, as I advise, using OTC (over-the-counter) products will probably "irritate" the skin due to inferior ingredients penetrating the skin at a deeper level.  You will save money by learning the proper techniques on skin care and how to use Professional Products as directed for the absolute best outcome.  Join the VIP program to save $$$ on Professional Treatments and 15% on ALL Professional Skin Care.

Signs you are NOT exfoliating enough:
  • blackheads
  • deep wrinkles
  • dry, tough skin
Cleansing and Exfoliating (physically and chemically) are vital for healthy, strong skin.

Examples of "physically exfoliating":

Examples of "chemically exfoliating":

It is also Vital to use quality, professional products properly!  Many times people may have the right products, but aren't using them properly or enough!  If you have a product opened for over a year, you aren't using it properly and throw it away - it is too OLD!

Here is an example of proper professional and home care:

  • Cleanse with Facial Wash (daily)
  • Polish with Pigment Bar (once per day)
  • Pearberry or Honeynut Refining Polish (3x per week) unless thin skin - use less or Daily Exfoliant
  • Use your "Correctives" (for pigment mix pump of Pigment Gel, C&E, Brightening Retinol - 3x per week)
  • Hydrate - Probiotic Calming Cream, Apres Peel (many choices of moisturizers)- Layering your products is like "multi-vitamins" for your skin.  Different products = Different beneficial properties!  If your skin "drinks" up all the topical moisture, ADD MORE!  Your skin will tell you if it is still thirsty.  Just remember - EXFOLIATE FIRST!
  • Layer your products from serums (lightest to heaviest).  If using a sunscreen, apply very last.  Never use sunscreen as your moisturizer - please!
  • Get one peel and one dermaplaning each month....or as Jewls advises for your skin
  • Join the VIP Program for huge savings on treatments and professional skin care
See you soon!

Well, it's been about a year now since my last Blog.  Time sure goes by when there's a lot of stuff happening (good or bad).  Anyway, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss a little about Microblading (the way I do it) and how it can benefit you.

This is the time when technology has truly innovated permanent makeup through the use of Digital Machines (this is what I use) to implant pigment into the skin with much more stability, depth and color.  Pigments have also come a long way.  I am very satisfied with both the digital machine and the pigments I use here at the day spa.

Hairstroke Brows (Digital Microblading, 3D Brows) are an excellent way to enhance existing brows or even to create brand new ones!

I use a digital machine with a single Acupuncture needle to create smooth, beautiful strokes with little to no, swelling or trauma to the skin.  The brows look beautiful immediately after.  They will be slightly darker initially for the first couple days.  It is vital to take your post-care seriously in order to prevent color loss.  My recommendation is two things: pat with water and a cloth gently and apply a small amount of A&D Ointment or Vaseline to the affected area for the first 5 days.  Absolutely NO sweating, cleansers on the area.

There are several before-and-after photo's on my website.  Review these and choose "Skin Care By Jewls" to create beautiful brows for you:)

First, let me start this Blog off by saying this is a common occurence and I feel it is my responsibility as a Professional Aesthetician to bring to light some of the practices clients take in order to save a little money.
  • Purchasing skin care the Licensed Professional is recommending from cheaper, unauthorized online retailers
  • Getting professional treatments, then using over-the-counter products on newly exfoliated skin
  • Blaming the professional for skin irritations when the client is clearly NOT following the recommendations from the provider
This is not intended to offend anyone, simply educate on proper skin care for the best outcome for the client's skin health.

Okay....I will use my two skin care lines as an example of "Professional Skin Care" - PCA and Epicuren - they will be referred to as PSC.  These PSC lines educate us, your Licensed Skin Care Providers, in the line and how it works in the skin.  We take continuing education classes and have certificates to show that we have the knowledge to make decisions on what is best for the clients skin.  This industry is constantly changing and the ingredients in the products are "active" and designed for changing your skin for a healthy, more youthful appearance.  The shelf life of products is typically one year.  Organic products have a VERY short shelf  life and if it is truly organic, once it is opened, it's shelf life is, at best, one month.  Also, natural, organic products will NOT make change in the's like slapping some mayo on your skin and wondering why you still have hyperpigmentation.....this is where the Licensed, educated professionals come in.

PSC lines ONLY sell to Licensed Skin Care Providers!  Here is a statement taken directly from PCA's website:

"We are aware that our products are being re-sold on sites like We often receive inquiries in regards to whether this is an authorized retailer of ours. The answer to this question is no.
Like many other beauty brands, PCA SKIN’s products can end up online or on the shelves of unauthorized retailers. We do not guarantee any products purchased through an unauthorized seller, as the product may be expired, diluted, counterfeit and may not be safe to use. These products fall outside of our warranty and we cannot return or replace them.
We have a zero tolerance policy towards unauthorized sellers and take immediate action when they are discovered. As a standard practice, PCA SKIN:
  • does not sell to unauthorized retailers
  • monitors global sales online to identify fraudulent accounts
  • has an internal department that conducts surveillance and investigates fraudulent accounts
  • actively monitors unusual buying patterns
  • immediately shuts down any accounts found to be diverting products to unauthorized selling locations
in conjunction with a law firm, takes legal action to pursue the closing of unauthorized online stores
If you suspect that a seller is unauthorized, you can report them to us for investigation at" -, PCA...
Whether or not you (client) realize this, it is an insult to your Licensed Skin Care Provider, ME, when I spend the time to educate you on what to use, how to use it and you go elsewhere to save money.  I actually had to change my VIP Membership Contract's wording to make this very clear:
As a VIP Member, the client is REQUIRED to purchase their skin care from me and me ONLY.  I always keep track of what my clients use so we can work TOGETHER to ensure the best possible outcome.  I am performing "Corrective" skin work (chemical peels, enzymes, microneedling etc) which needs certain products to "build" the skin back up properly to enhance what is being done in the treatment room.  When inferior products are used on newly exfoliated skin, the outcome is usually pretty bad!  Red, irritated, bumps....this is NOT Rosacea, it is angry skin - it's angry that your using the wrong products on it.  You will actually save money, and your skin will look gorgeous when working WITH your licensed professional and not trying to "cut corners" and save a buck!
Now, clients who are not on my VIP program can come in and receive regular-priced treatments and use whatever skin care they wish to.  Most clients understand that it is in their best interest to follow the recommendations given to them.  But, unfortunately, not everyone does which is the reason for this BLOG.  The client will actually save money in the long run (instead of having 20 different otc products on your counter)  when following the recommendations simply because as the skin changes, it is necessary to use different products at different times for specific purposes instead of never acheiving the desired results from lack of understanding how the skin truly works.
I think I've covered what I needed to cover, and I am available to answer questions via contact form on my website:
